Industrial refrigerators and air conditioners are usually large assemblies that use a lot of energy and refrigerant. This is because they are usually required to either cool large enclosures or provide very low temperature environments. Standard refrigeration methods will require large motors to power the large compressors. Scaling to required output may require that more efficient methods be used instead.
The simpler nature of the gas absorption refrigeration type of ammonia refrigeration may prove more applicable to industrial refrigeration applications. In fact, this is method of choice. Ammonia is cheaper than most other man-made refrigerants thus its use allows for greater cost efficiency. Also, ammonia is environmentally neutral and absolutely has no effect on the ozone layer. In addition, the gas absorption refrigeration method uses direct application of heat in the process rather than electricity that drives the motor in standard methods. This allow for cheaper operations since direct electricity is more expensive than fuel.
