My Special Gifts

I remember, as a child, I always got shawls with matching hair wear that later found out was made from balls of fingering weight yarn.  My father’s sisters were never seen without a knitting needle sets, crochet hooks and assorted balls of  discount yarn, I now presume, that came in a variety of colors and in different materials.  Most of the time, I saw my aunts chatting away while their hands went to and fro.  We, the children, never saw the end product until after reaping the wrappings of a gift package which was either under the tree, tucked inside a big sock hanging by the door or on a table top with all the other birthday gifts.  Of course, they did other things using other kinds of material which was either the bulky, hunky and the worsted type depending on what it was for and who the recipient was.

My children are all grown up and have their own families. I did not break the tradition, I do the same thing these days now that I have so much time. I enjoyed receiving my special gifts because I believe they were made for no other child but me. I am very sure my grand children will enjoy receiving them too and the memory of seeing me chattering away while hands flew back and forth will fill them with awe too.
